PostScript font

An outline font that conforms to Adobe Software’s specifications for Type 1 printer fonts, which require a Postscript compatible printer. As opposed to a bitmapped font, which often prints with unacceptably crude edges and curves, PostScript’s outline font technology produces smooth letters that your printer renders at its maximum possible resolution. A PostScript font comes with a screen font, which simulates the font’s appearence onscreen, as well as a printer font, which you must download to the printer before you print. Most PostScript laser printers come with several PostScript fonts built into the printer’s permanent memory; downloading is not necessary before using these fonts. PostScript fonts are scalable, which means that you need not have a separate font for every font size you want to print (as you must with bitmapped fonts); you can choose any font size you want within a specified range (for example, from four to 72 points), and you will get smooth looking type at the printer. Note, though, that the type may look jagged onscreen unless you purchase Adobe Type Manager, which brings PostScript scalable font technology to the display screen. For personal computer users who do not want to blend text with high quality EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) graphics, TrueType font technology, jointly developed by Apple Computer and Microsoft Corporation, provides a costeffective alternative to PostScript fonts and PostScript laser printers. Like PostScript fonts, TrueType fonts are outline fonts, so they print a high resolution with smooth edges and they are scalable, so you can choose any font size within the specified range and get good results. But TrueType fonts are much more economical: TrueType fonts do not require the printer to have an expensive interpreter (which requires a microprocessor). Moreover, if you’re using TrueType with Microsoft Windows 3.1, or with the Mac’s System 7, you do not need Adobe Type Manager to see scalable fonts onscreen.
