System/360,System/370,System/390

In 1964, IBM introduced the System/360 family of computer systems. It was the first time in history that a complete line of computers was announced at one time. Much of the 360 architecture still exists in current-day IBM mainframes. In 1970, the System/370 series was introduced, which added virtual memory and other enhancements.
Subsequent lines included the 303x, 43xx, 308x, 309x and 9370 models, all based on the 370 architecture. In 1990, IBM introduced the System/390 family that featured the ESA/390 architecture and operating systems, ES/9000 hardware, ESCON fiber optic channels and SystemView.
In the mid-1990s, bipolar-based ES/9000s were superseded by the much smaller, microprocessor-based Parallel Enterprise Server and Multiprise series. See Parallel Sysplex.
