sort

To reorder data into a new sequence. The operating system can typically sort file names and text lists. In word processors, sorting allows for all the text in the document or a marked block of text to be resequenced into either an ascending (normal) or descending sequence.
In database programs, sorting resequences all the records in the file by one or more fields and often generates an entirely new copy of the file.
