Microprocessors are so inexpensive that they can be embedded in even the most prosaic of everyday devices, such as roasters, coffee makers, and ovens. At the University of Virginia, an undergraduate engineering student created a microprocessor-controlled barbecue oven that slow-roasts a side of beef at the optimum temperature.
A temperature sensor tells the micropro-cessor whether the beef is too hot or cool, and adjusts the electric heating element. An analysis program calcu-lates the optimum cooling time. Taste testers agreed that the results were impressive indeed..
