Secure Socket Layer (SSL)

A security system devised by Netscape to encrypt sensitive personal information, such as credit card details that are transmitted over the Web. Both the user and the site visited need to support SSL.
When this happens, the secure nature of the site is indicated by the appearance of a small, closed padlock in the bottom left-hand corner of the browser’s status bar. An open padlock indicates a site that is not secure.
