Data that describes other data. Data dictionaries and repositories are examples of meta data. The term may also refer to any file or database that holds information about another database’s structure, attributes, processing or changes. Although the term is widely used without the dash, the word Metadata is a trademark of Metadata Information Partners. See data dictionary and repository.
