A conpputerassisted instruction (CM) technology that uses a computer to provide access to up to two hours of video information stored on a videodisc. Like CDROM, videodisks are readonly optical storage media, but they are designed specifically for the storage and randomaccess retrieval of images, including stills and continuous video. An interactive videodisk application includes a computer program that serves as a front end to the information stored on the video disk. a cable that links the compputer to the videodisk player, and a videodisk that contains the appropriate images. Using the front end program, the user explores the contents of the videodisk. For example, with a videodisk of paintings in the National Gallery of Art, the user can demand, “Show me all the renaissance paintings that depict flowers or gardens.” A welldesigned front end program can lead the viewer through a series of vivid instructional experiences underthe viewer’s complete control.
