interactive processing

A method of using the computer in which the computer’s processing operations are monitored directly on a video display so that the user can catch and correct errors before the processing operation is completed. Interactive processing is so characteristic of personal computing that it’s easy to forget the old days, when batch processing was the only way you could use the computer. Certain features of today’s programs, however, hearken back to the early days. Word processing programs, for example, sometimes require you to embed formatting commands into the text, rather than showing you their effects directly onscreen. See batch processing.
