An IBM standard for the organization of onscreen computer displays and part of the company’s Systems Application Architecture(SAA). The standard, called Common User Access(CUA), calls for the bus throughout a computing system of many of the user interface features found in graphical user interface features pulldown menus, dialog boxes with check boxes and option buttons, and highlighted accelerator keys for rapid keyboard selection of commands. The CUA standard is now widely found in character based MSDOS applications, and it’s bringing a new uniformity to the previously chaotic world of MSDOS user interfaces typified by World Perfect’s idiosyncratic function key assignments and menus. Strictly speaking; the CUA interface isn’t a graphical user interface (GUI), because it runs in the character mode and doesn’t use the onscreen pictorial representation of computer resources in the form of icons. But the CUA interface has just about every other GUI benefit, including a refreshing commonality of key assignments and procedures across applications F1 brings up Help, F3 cancels or exits, F10 displays the menu, and so on.
