Founded in 1986, the IETF is a mostly volunteer organization of working groups dedicated to identifying problems and proposing technical solutions for the Internet. It facilitates transfer of ideas from the Internet Research Task Force(IRTF) to the Internet community and is supported by efforts of the Internet Society(ISOC). The Internet Architecture Board(IAB) provides architectural guidelines for the IETF, and the Internet Engineering Steering Group(IESG) provides overall direction.
