IDE drive

A hard disk for 80286, 80386, and 80486 computers, that contains most of the controller circuitry within the drive itself. Designed to connect to computers containing an IDE interface on their motherboards, IDE drives combine the speed of ESDI drives with the intelligence of the SCSI hard drive interface. This performance is offered at a price lower than most ESDI and SCSI drives. Moreover, IDE drives present themselves to the computer electronically as if they were standard ST506 drives, for which the 80286 and 80386 were originally designed.
