Extended Industry Standard Architecture(EISA)

A 32bit expansion bus design introduced by a consortium of IBM PC compatible computer makers to counter IBM’s proprietary Micro Channel Bus. Unlike the Micro Channel Bus, the EISA bus is downwardly compatible with existing 16 bit peripherals such as disk drives and display adapters. EISA machines once the state of the an in personal computing, have been eclipsed by models that offer local busses, in which video circuits and disk drives are directly connected to the processor.
