ESCON(Enterprise Systems CONnection)

A fiberoptic peripheral channel on an IBM System/390 mainframe. It transfers data up to 17 Mbyte/sec and over very long distances if required (more than five miles). An ESCON Director is a coupling device that provides the actual number of ports.
