DSL(Digital Subscriber Line)

A modem technology that increases the digital speed of ordinary telephone lines by a substantial factor over common V.34 (33600 bps) modems. DSL modems offer symmetrical and asymmetrical operation. Asymmetrical DSL (ADSL) provides 1.544 Mbps downstream and 64 Kbps upstream, which is suited for Internet usage and video on demand. RADSL and VDSL are asymmetric variations that provide higher downstream speeds. Symmetric DSL (HDSL and SDSL), provide up to 2 Mbps in both directions. All DSL technologies have distance limitations, typically between two and three miles, between the telephone company’s central office and the customer’s site.
