Program modules that are designed to communicate and interoperate with each other at runtime. Components can be large or small. They can be written by different development environments abd they may or may not be platform independent. Components can run in stand alone machines, on a LAN or intranet or on the Internet. CORBA, COM and JavaBeans are the primary component software architectures competing today.
