combinatorial explosion

A barrier to the solution of a problem that occurs when the possibilities that have to be computed are too numerous. Combinatorial explosions vex the designers of chess software, which must frequently compute and analyze tens of thousands of alternative moves in a turn. People are better than computers at solving such problems, because they rely on asyet poorly understood intuitive processes that narrow down the range of possibilities to a manageable number, which is why the best chess champions can still beat the best chess programs.
