codec(COderDE Coder or COmpressor/DECompressor)

A hardware circuit that converts analog sound, speech or video to digital code. It typically includes both analog to digital and digital to analog conversion (coder/decoder) as well as compression and decompression (compressor/decompressor). However, if the codec is used for general purpose data compression such as for text and graphics files, it typically refers to software.
