CD(Compact Disc)

A digital audio disc that contains up to 72 minutes of hifi stereo sound. Introduced in 1982, the disc is a plastic platter 4.75″ in diameter, with binary code recorded as microscopic pits on one side. Individual selections are playable in any sequence. Other forms of CDs, such as CDROMs and CD-I discs, all stem from the audio CD. Sound waves are sampled 44,056 times per second, and each sample is converted into a 16bit number. It takes approximately 1.5 million bits of storage for one second of stereo. See also carrier detect.
