A utility program that makes it easier to back up program and data files from a hard disk to a backup medium such as floppy disks. A good backup utility can back up an entire hard disk on a series of floppies; the program prompts you when one disk is full and the next one is needed. Experienced computer users don’t waste time regularly backing up an entire hard disk, because most of its contents are applications and the many support files- such as printer drivers-that these applications require. IN the event of a disk failure, you can recover these applications and files by reinstalling the programs after repairing or replacing the disk. (You can recover your hard more quickly, however, if at one time you have performed a full backup of your disk; using the restore operation to re-create your hard disk usually is faster than reinstalling program and configuration files.) A good backup utility allows you to back up selected directories-the directories that contain your irreplaceable documents. By default, most Windows applications save their documents to their own directories forcing you to back up all the application’s files in addition to the document files. You can avoid this problem in two ways. The first way is to use a backup utility that allows you to specify the extensions of files you want to back up. If you specify the extensions that your applications automatically assign to documents. such as DOC. WB1, or WB3, those files-and no others-will be backed up. The second way is to configure all your Windows applications to save your files to a single directory called DOCS. To do so, create the DOCS directory. Then highlight an applications’s icon in the Program Manager, and choose Properties from the File menu. Type the directory’s path name in the Working Directory dialog box.
