In Microsoft Windows and MS-DOS, to create a link between a data file’s extension (such as DOC) and a specific application program. You can open an associated file and start the application that create it by double-clicking the document’s icon in the File Manager. When you install a Windows application, the installation utility tells Windows which extension─such as DOC or WB1─the program uses. You can tell whether a file has been associated with an application by looking at the file name in the File Manager’s directory window. Associated files are shown with a document icon─a page with writing on it. If an application’s files are not automatically associated, you can use the Associate command from the File Manager’s File menu to create an association.
