anonymous FTP

In UNIX-based systems linked to Internet, the use of the FTP program to contact a distant computer system, log on to its public directories, and transfer files from that computer to your own disk storage area. The FTP program is named for UNIX file transfer protocol (FTP) that governs the transmission of data. When you log on to the distant computer and are asked to type a password, you type “anonymous;” if the system permits anonymous FTP access, you can the use the standard UNIX directory-switching (cd) and directory-listing (ls) commands to view the available files. For assistance in locating files to access via anonymous FTP or other means, you can use Archie, Gopher, WAIS, and the World-Wide-Web.
