animated GIF

Graphics Interchange Format. An animated image produced by a series of computer-drawn graphic images, which when played in succession give the apperance of movement; e.g. a moving diagram or cartoon. Animated GIFs require much less memory that a graphic image and can be played by major Web browsers without the need for additional software.
