Software that tracks individual tasks that make up an entire job. Managing a big project, like building a submarine or the World Trade Center in New York, is far from easy. Thousands of little jobs must be coordinated so that they’re finished at the same time that thousands of other little jobs are finished, because both groups of little jobs are prerequisites for the next phase of the project. To help project managers cope with the problems caused by having so many activities going on at once, project management techniques called CPM (critical path method) and PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique) were created. Both methods try to help managers discern the critical path that is, the jobs that must be completed on time if the whole project is to be finished as scheduled. When the critical path becomes clear, the manager can allocate the resources necessary to complete these tasks in a timely fashion. Project management software brings to PCs the analytical tools of CPM and PERT, but whether many personal computer users will benefit from managing projects with these techniques is doubtful. CPM and PERT are costeffective only for large projects where a manager or team of managers cannot keep track of all the tasks involved without some recordkeeping assistance. Few PC users are likely to engage in tasks of that size, and the value of CPM and PERT for smaller project is not clear, even when a computer takes care of the formerly troublesome calculations involved in these techniques.
