network adapter, network card

A printed circuit board that plugs into a client machine or server and controls the exchange of data over a network. It performs the electronic functions of the access method, or data link protocol, such as Ethernet and Token Ring. The twisted pair, coax or fiber optic transmission medium interconnects all adapters in the network.
