(1) (Hardware Abstraction Layer) The translation layer in Windows NT that resides between the NT kernel and I/O system and the hardware itself.

(2) The spaceship computer in the film, “2001″, which takes over command of the ship by itself. The name comes from Heuristic/Algorithmic, which is how the machine aquired its knowledge in the story. The letters H-A-L coincidentally precede I-B-M.
