The removal of a file name from a directory without actually removing the contents of the file from the disk. You should understand how personal computers erase files for two reasons; security and the recovery of acci-dentally deleted files. When you erase a file with a DEL. or ERASE statement, the operating system does not actually destroy the data or program instructions stored on the disk; the operating system merely deletes the name of the file from the disk directory so that the space the file occ-u-pies is made available for future storage operations. This procedure brings up the security angle; others can recover sensitive data from your system, even if you think you have erased the information. To prevent the recovery of such data, you can use a shareware program such as Complete Delete(Macintosh) that totally erases the information on disk. The fact that file deletions do not actually erase the data on disk can be helpful if the deletion was accidental. An undelete utility, widely available as shareware and in utility program packages such as Symantec Utilities(Macintosh environment) and Norton Utilities(IBM PC-compatible environment), can restore a deleted file if no other information has been written over the file.

Để tránh việc tự phục hồi của những dữ liệu nhạy cảm, bạn nên dùng tiện ích xóa tập tin trong các chương trình nhu PC Tools. hoặc đối với Macintosh thì dung chương trình cổ đông Complete Delete, nó sẽ xóa hoàn toàn dữ liệu khỏi đĩa.
