batch processing

(1) Processing a group of transactions at one time. Transactions are collected and processed against the master files (master files updated) at the end of the day or some other time period. Contract with transaction processing.

(2) When a number of similar tasks are collected and processed together. This is often done so that jobs that use the computer for along time can be done when the computer is no longer needed for more urgent tasks; e.g. in an office, printing of documents may be done in the evening.
