The circuitry that controls the physical operations of the floppy disks andior hard disks directly connected to the computer. Unitil recently, most disk drive controllers were plugin adapters, but a clear trend toward including this circuitry on the computer’s motherboard now exists. With the advent of the Intelligent Drive Electronics (IDE) standard, which transfers much of the controller circuitry to the drive itself, the inclusion of the remaining circuitry on the motherboard has become much more simple. Wherever it is positioned, the disk drive controller circuitry performs two functions: it employs an interface standard (such as ST506/ST412, ESDI, or SSCI) to establish communication with the drive’s electronics, as well as a data encoding scheme (such as MFM.RIL, or ARLL) to encode information on the magnetic surface of the disk.
