Cyclical Redundancy Cheaking(CRC)

In DOS, an automatic errorchecking method in which the operating system performs a computation on the data stored in a disk sector and writes the result of the computation at the end of the sector. When the system reads the data from the file, the computation is performed again, and the result is compared to the value stored at the end of the sector. If the two values disagree, the operating system attempts to read the data again, which usually solves the problems with the disk. CRC checks are more commonly used by file compression utilities (such as PKZIP) and for data communications error detection.
